Extend BACnet/IP Networks Up to 1 km with 10BASE-T1L

As building automation systems continue to migrate toward BACnet/IP, network distance limitations can create challenges when connecting controllers, sensors, and actuators across large facilities. Traditional Ethernet is generally limited to 100 meters, often requiring additional switches, gateways, or media converters to reach remote devices.

Defined by the IEEE 802.3cg standard, 10BASE-T1L addresses this challenge by delivering 10 Mbps full-duplex Ethernet communication over a single twisted pair for distances up to 1 km. Because BACnet/IP is an Ethernet-based protocol, it can run directly over 10BASE-T1L without protocol translation, gateways, or secondary fieldbus networks.

Unlike conventional Ethernet, which typically requires two or four wire pairs, 10BASE-T1L uses a single pair while providing significantly greater reach. It also supports a wide variety of cable types, allowing existing wiring previously used for MS/TP, Modbus, LON, and other legacy fieldbus networks to be repurposed for IP communications. This can reduce installation costs, minimize disruption, and accelerate modernization projects.

A Contemporary Controls EIMK-T1L Media Converter connects a JACE to two BACnet unitary controllers over distances of up to 1 km.

Installation is simplified as well. Because 10BASE-T1L is polarity insensitive, the wire pair can be connected in either orientation without affecting communication. Many 10BASE-T1L devices also use screw-terminal connections that are easier to terminate in the field than traditional RJ-45 connectors which helps reduce wiring errors and installation time.

For building owners and systems integrators, 10BASE-T1L extends BACnet/IP connectivity to areas that were previously impractical or costly to reach with standard Ethernet while maintaining seamless integration with enterprise IT networks. Support for Rapid Spanning Tree Protocol (RSTP) further enhances network resiliency by enabling redundant communication paths for critical applications.

The EIMK-T1L Media Converter from Contemporary Controls simplifies integration between standard Ethernet devices and 10BASE-T1L networks. The converter connects conventional 10BASE-T, 100BASE-TX, and 1000BASE-T devices to a 10BASE-T1L segment, extending network reach up to 1 km over a single twisted pair. Features include selectable auto-negotiation settings, configurable operating voltage, link-pass-through for RSTP applications, and removable screw-terminal connections for simple field wiring.

By combining long-distance Ethernet communication, cable reuse, simplified installation, and network resiliency, 10BASE-T1L extends BACnet/IP connectivity to the edge of the building while improving scalability and reducing deployment costs.
